Faith and Science

Many people are told they must choose between faith and science, and that choice pushed some out the door. But most Christians do not believe the two are actually at war. Faithful believers, including working scientists, hold a genuine range of views on origins: young-earth creationism, old-earth creationism, evolutionary creation, and intelligent design. Scripture tells us that God made the world and why; how and over what timescale is where sincere Christians differ.

What many were taught

A lot of us were taught that accepting mainstream science, especially an old universe or evolution, meant denying God, and that a real Christian had to reject it outright. The age of the earth became a loyalty test. Sometimes this was taught so rigidly that when the science turned out to be solid, people felt they had been lied to, and assumed the whole faith was the lie. Framing faith and science as a fight to the death set many believers up to feel they had to pick a side and lose either their mind or their soul.

What Scripture actually says

The opening of Genesis is a confession that the one God made everything, ordered and good, with humanity made in his image. It answers who and why. The Psalms treat the created world as a witness that points to God rather than away from him. Scripture does not set out to settle the mechanism or the timescale of creation, which is exactly the space where faithful readers differ.

What Christians disagree about

Among Christians who hold the Bible in high regard, the real range on origins looks like this:

• Young-earth creationism: reads Genesis 1 as six ordinary days and a young earth.
• Old-earth creationism: accepts an ancient universe while holding to special creation.
• Evolutionary creation (theistic evolution): God created through the process of evolution over deep time.
• Intelligent design: argues design is detectable in nature, held across several of the above camps.

Devout scientists and theologians can be found in each. Disagreeing about mechanism is not the same as disagreeing about whether God made the world.

What Jesus taught

Jesus spoke of a Father who feeds the birds, clothes the wildflowers, and sends rain on the just and the unjust, a world charged with the care of its Maker. He never asked anyone to shrink their sense of wonder or shut off their mind. Loving God with all your mind (Mark 12:30) leaves plenty of room for curiosity about how the world actually works.

What can be reconstructed

What can be reconstructed is a faith that does not fear the telescope or the fossil, that can say God made all this and also let science describe how. You do not have to choose between honesty about the evidence and trust in the Creator. Where you land on the age of the earth or on evolution is yours to study freely, and it does not decide whether you belong to God.
