Christianity & Buddhism: Suffering, Compassion, and the Two Ways
Buddhism and Christianity both begin with honest attention to suffering and both call for deep compassion, and they diagnose the human problem, and its cure, very differently. Buddhism traces suffering to craving and the illusion of a permanent self, and seeks release into nirvana; Christianity traces it to sin and a broken relationship with God, and offers grace, resurrection, and a God who enters suffering in Jesus. This is a respectful, primary-source walk through where the two ways meet and where they genuinely part.
Buddhism is a vast and ancient family of traditions, and this is a Christian reading of it, offered with respect and without caricature. We would rather name a real difference honestly than pretend two different paths are the same. Everything here is an invitation, never a demand.

Frequently asked questions
- What do Buddhism and Christianity share?
- Both begin with unflinching honesty about suffering, both prize deep compassion and non-retaliation, both critique the grasping ego, and both hold out real hope of liberation from the human predicament.
- What is the main difference between Buddhism and Christianity?
- Buddhism traces suffering to craving and seeks liberation by releasing it and the illusion of a permanent self, reaching nirvana, largely through one's own path. Christianity traces suffering to sin, offers salvation as God's gift of grace, and points to a personal God who enters suffering in Jesus and raises the person to eternal life.
- Does Living Bread represent Buddhism fairly?
- That is our aim. Living Bread is openly Christian, but we quote Buddhist sources accurately, distinguish Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, avoid caricature, and mark where the two paths genuinely differ rather than blur them. A Buddhist reader should be able to say we described the Dharma fairly.
Come and see
Buddhism begins with an honest look at suffering; so does the Gospel, though it answers it differently. The most direct way to know Jesus is to read his words and watch what he does. There is no pressure here.
