Use your gifts to serve
Christian Volunteer Opportunities for Teachers
A Christian teacher can serve Christ and neighbour by teaching where good schooling is scarce, in mission schools and international Christian schools, in literacy and English programs, in refugee and orphan-care settings, and by teaching at home in tutoring, after-school, and church ministries. Teaching opens doors that stay shut to almost every other worker.
Your skill is needed
A teacher shapes what a child believes is possible, and in much of the world a devoted teacher is rarer than gold. Missionary teachers educate the children of national believers and fellow workers, and reach communities that welcome a school long before they welcome a preacher. To teach faithfully is to give with diligence, as Scripture says of those who teach.
Where this skill serves
Real organizations that place and support Christian teachers include:
- TeachBeyond, a global organization that sends teachers to serve in schools and educational ministries around the world, short-term and long-term.
- Network of International Christian Schools (NICS), which staffs international Christian schools in many countries with Christian teachers and administrators.
- Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), which supports Christian schools and educators worldwide and can connect teachers to opportunities.
- English-teaching and literacy ministries, many missions use qualified teachers to run English, literacy, and adult-education programs as a genuine service and an open door.
These organizations are named as information, not endorsement. The Living Bread is not affiliated with them, and does not post their openings. Missions, terms, statements of faith, and current needs vary, so look into each one directly for yourself before you commit.
How to begin
Start small and start near. Tell your own church what you can do and ask where the need is; most fellowships are quietly desperate for skilled hands and rarely think to ask. From there you can widen out to a wider work. When you are ready, these places on The Living Bread will help you take the next honest step.
Come and see
Before your work is a skill it is a gift, and gifts have a Giver. Whatever your trade, the same Christ who filled craftsmen with his Spirit still delights to use ordinary hands, and he is gentle with everyone who comes to him honestly. If you have never really met him, you can begin today. It costs you nothing but a little quiet and an open heart.

Frequently asked questions
- How can a Christian teacher serve in missions?
- By teaching in mission and international Christian schools (through groups like TeachBeyond and NICS), in literacy and English programs, and in refugee or orphan-care education, as well as tutoring and after-school ministry at home. This is information, not endorsement, so verify with each.
- Do I need to be a missionary to teach abroad?
- Not necessarily. Some roles are full support-raised missionary posts, while others are salaried teaching positions at international Christian schools. Terms vary widely, so ask each organization directly.
- How can teachers serve without leaving home?
- Through tutoring under-served children, teaching English to immigrants and refugees, literacy programs, Sunday school, and after-school ministries. Your church can point you to the nearest need.
