Christian Volunteer Opportunities for Doctors
A Christian doctor can serve Christ and neighbour by giving medical care where it is scarce, through established medical-missions organizations, short-term surgical and clinic trips, hospital ships, disaster response, and free clinics at home. The skill God gave you to heal is one of the most needed gifts in missions anywhere in the world.
Your skill is needed
The world is desperately short of doctors where poverty is deepest. A physician who will go, or who will give a week or a career, can quite literally save lives that would otherwise be lost. Scripture treats healing as near to the heart of God, and the doctor who works as unto the Lord carries the compassion of Christ into places a sermon may never reach.
Where this skill serves
Several real, long-established organizations place and support Christian physicians. Among the best known:
- Mercy Ships, which operates hospital ships staffed largely by volunteer surgeons and medical crews providing free surgeries in port cities of Africa.
- Samaritan’s Purse (World Medical Mission), which sends volunteer doctors on short-term assignments to mission hospitals and deploys emergency field hospitals in disasters.
- Christian Medical & Dental Associations (CMDA), a fellowship of Christian physicians and dentists that runs short-term mission trips and supports career missionary doctors.
- Mission Doctors Association, a Catholic organization that prepares and sends physicians and their families to serve in mission hospitals overseas.

Start small and start near. Tell your own church what you can do and ask where the need is; most fellowships are quietly desperate for skilled hands and rarely think to ask.
