Use your gifts to serve

Christian Volunteer Opportunities for Designers

A Christian designer can serve Christ and neighbour by giving graphic, web, brand, and media work to ministries that could never afford it: churches, missions, relief organizations, and translation teams who need their message seen and understood. Good design is quiet hospitality, and much of it can be given remotely, on your own hours.

Your skill is needed

Ministries live or die by whether people can find and understand them, and most cannot afford a designer. A clean logo, a clear website, a readable Scripture layout, a poster a refugee can follow, these are acts of love that carry the message further. God filled craftsmen with his Spirit for skilled and beautiful work; design is that same gift in a new medium.

“And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship.”
Exodus 31:3-5

Where this skill serves

Because there is no single design-missions agency, the honest picture is a set of real opportunity-types and communities:

These organizations are named as information, not endorsement. The Living Bread is not affiliated with them, and does not post their openings. Missions, terms, statements of faith, and current needs vary, so look into each one directly for yourself before you commit.

How to begin

Start small and start near. Tell your own church what you can do and ask where the need is; most fellowships are quietly desperate for skilled hands and rarely think to ask. From there you can widen out to a wider work. When you are ready, these places on The Living Bread will help you take the next honest step.

Come and see

Before your work is a skill it is a gift, and gifts have a Giver. Whatever your trade, the same Christ who filled craftsmen with his Spirit still delights to use ordinary hands, and he is gentle with everyone who comes to him honestly. If you have never really met him, you can begin today. It costs you nothing but a little quiet and an open heart.

Frequently asked questions

How can a graphic or web designer serve in ministry?
By volunteering design and web work to churches, missions, and nonprofits that cannot afford it, through events like Creative Missions or directly with a ministry. Much of it is remote and flexible. This is information, not endorsement.
Is there design work in missions?
Yes, though usually as opportunity-types rather than one agency: Scripture and literacy layout, ministry branding and websites, and campaign and social media for missions and relief. Ask a ministry what they need.
Can I volunteer design remotely?
Very often, yes. Design is one of the easier skills to give from home, since files and feedback move online, which lets you serve a distant ministry without leaving your job.
