This day remembers a sixteenth-century account, cherished by millions, of Mary appearing to a poor indigenous man named Juan Diego near Mexico City. For those who keep it, it is a celebration of God's tender nearness to the humble and the poor, and it points beyond Mary to her Son.

Pilgrims travel to the basilica in Mexico City, many on foot, and churches hold early morning songs and flowers. Observances vary widely across traditions.
