Meskel (Finding of the Cross)

Meskel celebrates the finding of the cross of Christ. One of the great festivals of the Ethiopian church, it lifts up the cross on which the world was reconciled to God, remembered with fire and song.

How it is celebrated

A large bonfire called the Demera is built and lit, crowned with flowers, as crowds gather in procession singing and holding torches.
