A Bible reading plan for

When You Feel Far From God

7 days, honest and gentle

Feeling far from God does not mean you are far from God. This seven-day plan walks through the honest cries of people who felt the same distance, and the steady truth that runs under them: God has not moved, He is nearer than your feelings, and He is the kind of Father who runs to meet the one coming home.

“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?”Psalm 139:7 (KJV)

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1

    Psalm 139

There is nowhere you can go from His Spirit. Even in the dark, He is there, and the darkness is not dark to Him.

  2. Day 2

    Psalm 42

As the deer pants for water, the psalmist thirsts for a God who feels absent. It is holy to ache for Him, and honest to say so.

  3. Day 3

    Psalm 13

How long wilt thou forget me? God is not offended by the question. He welcomes the honest prayer of a heart that still turns to Him.

  4. Day 4

    Luke 15

The father sees the son while he is still a long way off, and runs. This is the heart you are returning to.

  5. Day 5

    Isaiah 55

Seek the Lord while He may be found. He is near, and His mercy is abundant, not grudging.

  6. Day 6

    Psalm 73

The psalmist nearly slips away, then says: nevertheless I am continually with thee. Feelings shifted; the holding did not.

  7. Day 7

    James 4

Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Take one small step toward Him today and watch what He does.

A reading plan is a servant, not a master. If you miss days there is no guilt here and no scorecard in heaven. Simply begin again where you left off. The goal was never to finish a list but to meet the One these words are about, Jesus, who is glad to be found by you today.

Where this plan is leading

The whole story of Jesus is God closing the distance. He came all the way down, was born in a stable, ate with sinners, and on the cross cried the very words of the psalm of abandonment, so that you would never be finally forsaken. If you feel far, look at the outstretched arms of Christ. That is how far God was willing to come for you.

Questions people ask

Why do I feel far from God?

Many faithful people feel distance from God, sometimes through grief, exhaustion, sin, doubt, or simply a dry season. The Bible treats this as normal, not as failure. Feelings of distance are not proof of God's absence; the psalms are full of people who felt far and were still held.

Does God still love me when He feels distant?

Yes. God's love does not rise and fall with your feelings. Romans 8 says nothing can separate you from His love in Christ, and Psalm 139 says there is nowhere you can go from His presence. He is nearer than the distance you feel.

How do I get close to God again?

Start small and start honest. Tell Him exactly how you feel, even the distance. Read a little each day, as in this plan. James 4:8 promises that as you draw near to Him, He draws near to you. The first step home is usually just turning your face back toward Him.
