Its place in the story

Along with Pithom, Raamses was built for Pharaoh during Israel's oppression, and the region of Rameses was where Jacob's family had first settled. Israel set out from Raamses at the start of the Exodus. It marks both the settlement and the departure of God's people from Egypt.
