‘What is truth?’ is famous partly because of who asked it: a Roman governor named Pilate, standing face to face with Jesus. It is a question everyone reaches eventually. We sense that truth must be more than opinion or preference, that reality is stubbornly there whether we agree with it or not, and yet we argue endlessly about how to find it and whether we can be sure.

What Jesus said

When Jesus spoke about truth, he did something no philosopher had done: he tied truth to himself, and to freedom.

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 8:32

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

John 14:6

“Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.”

John 18:38

Notice the irony: Pilate asks ‘what is truth?’ while Truth is standing in front of him. The Christian claim is that truth is not merely a set of correct statements but a Person to be known, and that knowing him sets people free.
