What Does the Bible Say About Loss?

The Bible meets loss with deep compassion and honest hope, never demanding that we hide our grief. It promises that God is near to the brokenhearted, that those who mourn will be comforted, and that for the believer even death is swallowed up in the promise of resurrection. Loss is real, and it is held within a larger story of hope.

Grief is love with nowhere to go, and Scripture never tells the mourner to hurry up or feel differently. Jesus himself wept at a grave. God draws near precisely to the brokenhearted.

For the believer, grief and hope live side by side. We sorrow, but not without hope, because Christ has conquered death and promises reunion and a world where loss is no more. It is right to grieve, and it is safe to hope.

The deepest answer is Jesus

Jesus wept at the tomb of a friend and then called him back to life; he weeps with us in our loss and holds the keys of death and resurrection.
