What Does the Bible Say About Hypocrisy?

Jesus reserved some of his sharpest words for hypocrisy, the gap between outward religion and inward reality, honouring God with the lips while the heart is far away. Scripture calls us to sincerity, to a faith that is real all the way through rather than a performance, and to let our inside and outside match.

Hypocrisy is not the same as imperfection; every believer falls short. It is pretending to be something we are not, performing righteousness for an audience while the heart is untouched.

The answer is not to lower the standard but to seek a real, inside-out faith, letting God change the heart rather than only managing appearances. Honest, humble acknowledgment of our failures is the opposite of hypocrisy.

The deepest answer is Jesus

Jesus was utterly real, with no gap between his words and his heart, and he offers to make our faith genuine rather than a mask.
