The Ten Plagues of Egypt
The ten plagues were God's mighty acts to free his enslaved people from Egypt. One by one they fell on the land, judgment upon Egypt and upon the gods it trusted, until the final night when death passed over every house marked by the blood of a lamb, and Israel walked out free. This is the road to the Passover, and the Bible's great picture of the greater deliverance to come in Christ, our Passover, sacrificed for us.
Moses came to the most powerful king on earth with a word from the God of the Hebrews: Let my people go. Pharaoh refused, and so the LORD stretched out his hand. Each plague struck harder than the last, exposing the emptiness of Egypt's gods and the hardness of Pharaoh's heart, and drawing an ever clearer line between Egypt and the people God had claimed. The account is told honestly, holding together Pharaoh's own defiance and God's sovereign purpose, and it ends not merely in judgment but in rescue, at a doorpost marked with blood.
