The Sword of the Spirit
Every other piece Paul has named is defensive. The last is a weapon. The Roman soldier's short sword was made for close combat, quick and precise at arm's length. Paul calls this sword the word of God, wielded by the Spirit, the one offensive tool in the armor and the means by which the believer strikes back at the enemy.
