For students, on the way to Christ
Christian Dating in College
Dating in college is confusing for everyone, and adding faith to it does not make it magically simple. You are surrounded by people, apps, situationships, and a lot of unspoken rules nobody actually explains. Maybe you want a real relationship and keep getting hurt. Maybe you have hooked up and felt emptier than before. Maybe you are single and tired of feeling like something is wrong with you. Wherever you are, you are not behind, and you are not too much or too little. Following Jesus does not mean you have dating figured out; it means you have Someone to bring the confusion to. Let us talk honestly about what love, patience, and God's design actually look like when you are twenty and figuring out your own heart in real time.
“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:”1 Thessalonians 4:3
“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,”1 Corinthians 13:4
The honest truth
The honest truth: a lot of college dating runs on fear, the fear of being alone, being unwanted, being the last one single. That fear makes people settle, chase, or give away parts of themselves just to be chosen. And here is the thing nobody says out loud: physical stuff can feel like closeness while actually keeping you from it, because it skips the slow work of being truly known. God's design for sex inside a covenant is not Him withholding fun. It is Him protecting something powerful from being spent on people who were never going to stay. If your past is messy, that does not lower your value one inch. You are not damaged goods. You are a person God still delights in, fully.
What actually helps
What actually helps: get clear on who you are becoming before you obsess over who you will end up with. The best preparation for a good relationship is not finding the right person; it is becoming a whole one. Watch how someone treats people they gain nothing from. Notice if you can be honest around them or only impressive. Move slowly on purpose; patience is not a rule, it is love protecting you both. Talk about physical boundaries out loud and early, before the moment when it is hardest to think clearly. Keep friendships that are not romantic, because a healthy life is bigger than one relationship. And if you have been hurt or crossed lines you regret, let that inform your wisdom without letting it define your worth.
Where this leads: Jesus
Where this leads: Jesus. Underneath the search for a person is a deeper ache: to be fully known and fully loved at the same time, with nothing hidden and nothing rejected. No boyfriend or girlfriend can carry that weight; it will crush them and disappoint you. Only One love goes all the way to the bottom of you and does not flinch. Jesus knows the parts of you that you hide on the third date, and He stays. That is the love the Bible describes as patient and kind, that keeps no record of wrongs, and He lives it toward you first. When you are secure in being loved like that, dating stops being a desperate audition. You can offer love instead of extracting it. You can wait without panic. You can be single without feeling empty, because you are already held.

Questions people ask
Is it wrong to date someone who is not a Christian?
The Bible cautions about being closely bound to someone who does not share your deepest direction, because what you love most quietly shapes everything. This is not about looking down on anyone; it is about honesty. Ask whether this person draws you toward the life you actually want or slowly away from it. Go in with open eyes and no shame, and pray for wisdom rather than just permission.
I have already had sex. Did I ruin God's plan for me?
No. You did not use up your worth or break something God cannot restore. He removes our failures completely and does not keep bringing them up. Your value was never in your inexperience; it is in being loved by Him. You can choose differently going forward, and that choice is not about earning your way back. It is simply walking home to the One who already welcomes you.
