Zechariah 3
Zechariah sees Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD in filthy garments, accused by Satan. The LORD rebukes the accuser, calls Joshua a brand plucked from the fire, and orders his filthy clothes removed and clean ones put on, declaring his iniquity taken away. Joshua is charged to walk faithfully, and God promises to bring his servant the Branch and to remove the land's guilt in a single day.
What happens in Zechariah 3
In this fourth vision the high priest Joshua stands before the angel of the LORD, with Satan at his right hand to accuse him. The LORD silences Satan, choosing Jerusalem and calling Joshua a burning stick snatched from the fire. Joshua wears filthy garments, symbolizing the guilt of priesthood and people. The angel commands attendants to strip off the filthy clothes, tells Joshua his iniquity has passed from him, and reclothes him in rich garments.
Zechariah asks that a clean turban be set on Joshua's head, and it is done. Then Joshua is charged: if he walks in God's ways, he will govern God's house. He and his fellow priests are signs of things to come, for God will bring his servant the Branch. A stone with seven eyes is set before Joshua, engraved by the LORD, and God promises to remove the land's iniquity in one day, when each will invite his neighbor under vine and fig tree.
Zechariah 3 in context
This vision addresses the legitimacy of the restored priesthood. Joshua son of Josedech led worship in the rebuilt community around 520 BC, but the exile had left the nation and its priests defiled. Standing accused pictures the real question haunting the remnant: could a guilty people and a compromised priesthood truly stand before a holy God? The Branch and the engraved stone point ahead to a coming cleansing greater than the priesthood could provide.

Messianic prophecy
How Zechariah 3 points to Jesus
The title the Branch is a messianic name Zechariah shares with Isaiah and Jeremiah, a coming descendant of David who will rule and cleanse. Here God binds the Branch to a promise to remove the iniquity of the land in one day and to a stone engraved by his own hand. Christians read this fulfilled in Jesus, whose single sacrifice took away sin once for all, the one day of cleansing the priesthood only foreshadowed.
Joshua's scene pictures the gospel: the guilty stand accused, God silences the accuser, iniquity is stripped away, and clean garments are given. In Christ we receive that exchange, clothed in a righteousness not our own, our filthy garments carried away so we may stand and serve before God unafraid.
Questions about Zechariah 3
How can God simply declare Joshua's guilt gone without ignoring justice?
The vision leaves the mechanism unstated here but hints at it: God promises to remove the land's iniquity in one day through his servant the Branch and the engraved stone. The guilt is not overlooked; it is dealt with elsewhere, by God's own provision. Joshua receives the verdict of cleansing that a coming sacrifice would justify, so mercy and justice meet rather than compete.
Why does clothing matter so much in this vision?
Clothing here is not decoration but standing. Filthy garments mark a priest unfit to approach God; clean robes and a turban restore him to holy service. The change of clothes visibly declares that his identity and access have been transformed by God's word alone. It teaches that we come before God dressed in what he gives, not in what we have earned or ruined.
Reflection
Do you hear an accusing voice rehearsing your failures until you feel unfit to draw near? Joshua stood filthy and accused, yet God did the stripping and the clothing. Let God answer the accuser for you today, and receive the clean garments you could never wash yourself.
