Numbers 31
At the LORD's command Israel wages war on Midian, whose women had lured Israel into idolatry at Peor. Balaam is killed. Moses directs the purification of soldiers and plunder by fire and water, and the spoil is divided between warriors and congregation, with a tribute set aside for the priests and Levites. The officers bring an offering of gold as atonement for their souls.
What happens in Numbers 31
The LORD tells Moses to execute judgment on Midian before he is gathered to his people. A thousand men from each tribe go out with Phinehas the priest, the holy instruments, and the trumpets. They defeat Midian, kill its five kings, and slay Balaam, whose counsel had earlier drawn Israel into the sin of Peor. This is one of the hardest chapters in Scripture, for Moses orders further killing in judgment on that seduction. The soldiers must remain outside the camp seven days and purify themselves and their captives.
Eleazar gives the ordinance for cleansing metal spoil through fire and the water of separation, and cloth through washing. The plunder is carefully counted and divided in half between the warriors and the whole congregation, with a tribute levied for the LORD. Finally the officers, finding not one of their men missing, bring wrought gold as an atonement offering, placed in the tabernacle as a memorial.
Numbers 31 in context
This closes the account of the Peor apostasy, where Midianite and Moabite women drew Israel into Baal worship and a plague killed thousands. Balaam, hired to curse Israel, had counseled this seduction when direct cursing failed.
The war is framed as covenant judgment, not conquest for gain. Modern readers rightly feel its severity; the text presents it as a unique act of judgment on a specific corruption, not a pattern for God's people.

Thematic connection
How Numbers 31 points to Jesus
This severe chapter presses two truths that meet in Christ. First, sin that seduces God's people is deadly serious; the seduction at Peor threatened the whole nation, and God will not let his people be quietly destroyed from within. At the cross, that same seriousness about sin fell not on the sinner but on the sinless Son, who bore the judgment in our place. Second, the whole army must be cleansed before returning to the camp, for contact with death defiles.
The water of separation and the fire only pointed forward; the blood of Christ finally cleanses the conscience from dead works to serve the living God. The officers' gold offered as atonement, a memorial that not one man was lost, whispers of the greater Shepherd who prays that of those given him he would lose none.
Questions about Numbers 31
How should we read the violence of this chapter honestly?
Without softening it. The text presents a specific act of judgment on Midian for deliberately corrupting Israel through the sin of Peor, not a template for how God's people treat neighbors. Under the new covenant Jesus explicitly refuses the sword for his kingdom. We can hold the ancient severity as God's judgment in that moment while trusting that final judgment belongs to God alone.
Why must the soldiers be purified before coming home?
Because contact with death defiled them under the law, even in a sanctioned war. Cleansing by fire and water was required before rejoining the holy camp. It teaches that nearness to God is never casual and that defilement must be dealt with, a need finally answered by the cleansing blood of Christ that purifies the conscience itself.
Reflection
This chapter refuses to treat sin as harmless. What seduced Israel nearly destroyed it. Ask where something is quietly luring your heart away, and bring it into the light. Then rest in the cleansing that fire and water only foreshadowed, made yours in Christ.
