Joshua 3
After three days at the Jordan, officers tell Israel to follow the ark of the covenant, keeping a reverent distance. Joshua calls the people to sanctify themselves for wonders. As the priests bearing the ark step into the flooded river at harvest, the waters upstream pile in a heap and stop. The priests stand firm on dry ground in the riverbed until the whole nation crosses over toward Jericho.
What happens in Joshua 3
Joshua rises early and moves the camp from Shittim to the bank of the Jordan. After three days officers pass through the host with instructions: when the people see the priests lifting the ark of the covenant, they are to break camp and follow, staying about two thousand cubits back so they can see the way they have never traveled. Joshua calls the nation to sanctify themselves, promising the LORD will do wonders.
The LORD tells Joshua that this day He will begin to magnify him as He was with Moses. As the priests step into the Jordan, which overflows its banks all through harvest, the waters coming down from above rise in a single heap far upstream near Adam, and the flow toward the Salt Sea is cut off. The priests stand firm on dry ground in the midst of the river while all Israel passes over.
Joshua 3 in context
Joshua 3 fulfills the promise that God would be with Joshua as with Moses. The Jordan crossing mirrors the Red Sea a generation earlier, bracketing the wilderness years. It is spring, the harvest season, when the river runs highest, so the miracle cannot be mistaken for an ordinary fording.
The ark of the covenant, the throne of God's presence, leads the way into the promised land.

And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people. 7And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee. 8And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan. 9And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God. 10And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites. 11Behold, the ark of the covenant of the LORD of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan. 12Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man. 13And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the LORD of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap. 14And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people; 15And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,) 16That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho. 17And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.

How Joshua 3 points to Jesus
The name Joshua is the Hebrew Yehoshua, rendered in Greek as Iesous, the same name as Jesus. Where Moses could not bring Israel into the land, Joshua leads them through the waters into their inheritance, a picture the New Testament draws on when it says Joshua did not give them final rest, so a greater rest remains in Christ (Hebrews 4:8-9).
The crossing on dry ground has long been read as an image of baptism, passing through waters of death into new life, and of Jesus leading His people into the promises of God. The ark bearing God's presence goes ahead of the people, as Christ, Immanuel, goes before us into every unknown country.

Why did the priests step into the Jordan before it parted?
The waters stopped only when the priests bearing the ark set their feet in the river at flood stage. God tied the miracle to an act of trust that had to move first, teaching Israel that His promises are received by obedience which steps forward before the outcome is visible. Faith walked to the water's edge, and only then did the river give way (Joshua 3:13-15).
What is the significance of the ark leading Israel across?
The ark of the covenant represented God's throne and presence. By sending it ahead into the flooded river, God signaled that He Himself was leading the people into the land, pioneering a path they had never walked. The reverent distance the people kept underscored His holiness even as He went before them into the unknown (Joshua 3:3-4).
Reflection
Israel had to follow a path they had never traveled, and their only assurance was the ark going before them. God rarely shows the whole way at once; He shows the next step and His presence in it. What flooded, uncrossable place is He asking you to approach, trusting Him to lead the way through?
