Joel 3
God announces judgment on the nations who scattered his people and divided his land. He gathers them into the valley of decision, where the LORD roars from Zion and the harvest is reaped. Yet for his own people the LORD is a refuge and strength. The chapter ends with a vision of a renewed land flowing with new wine and a fountain from the house of God, with Judah dwelling forever.
What happens in Joel 3
God promises that when he restores Judah and Jerusalem he will gather all nations into the valley of Jehoshaphat to enter into judgment for scattering his people, trafficking children, and looting his treasures. He confronts Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia, promising to return their cruelty on their own heads. Then he issues an ironic summons to war: let the nations beat plowshares into swords and assemble, for the LORD will come down to judge them.
The sickle is put in because the harvest is ripe and the winepress overflows with their wickedness. Multitudes stand in the valley of decision as the day of the LORD draws near, the heavens darken, and the LORD roars from Zion. Yet he is the hope and strength of his people. The chapter closes with promise: mountains dripping new wine, a fountain flowing from the house of the LORD, Egypt and Edom desolate, but Judah inhabited forever.
Joel 3 in context
Joel closes his book by widening the day of the LORD from a warning to Judah into a reckoning with all nations that oppressed her. The valley of Jehoshaphat, whose name means the LORD judges, is a symbolic arena of divine justice.
The reversed proverb about plowshares and swords deliberately echoes and inverts the peace visions of Isaiah and Micah.

How Joel 3 points to Jesus
The harvest and overflowing winepress of this chapter reappear in Revelation, where one like the Son of Man swings a sharp sickle and the winepress of God's wrath is trodden, drawing on Joel's imagery to portray Christ as the appointed judge of the nations. Jesus himself spoke of a final gathering when the Son of Man would separate all peoples, and Joel's valley of decision anticipates that day.
Yet the same LORD who roars from Zion is the hope and strength of his people, and in Christ that refuge is made personal. The fountain flowing from the house of the LORD echoes forward to Jesus, who promised living water and from whose side flowed a river for the thirsty, turning a scene of judgment into one of endless supply for those who belong to him.
Questions about Joel 3
Why is the harvest an image of judgment here?
A ripe harvest cannot be left standing; the time for gathering has come. Joel uses reaping and the overflowing winepress to say that the nations' wickedness has reached full measure and the moment of accounting has arrived. Revelation borrows the same picture for the Son of Man with the sickle, showing that judgment is not arbitrary rage but the fitting end of a season that has run its course.
How can God be both judge of nations and hope of his people?
The two are not in tension. The God who confronts oppressors is the same God who shelters the oppressed, and his justice is what makes his refuge trustworthy. For those who take shelter in him, the roaring from Zion is not terror but strength. In Christ this becomes clear: he bears judgment for his people so that for them the day of the LORD becomes hope.
Reflection
It is tempting to want justice for others while dreading it for ourselves. Joel places every nation in the valley of decision and then offers the LORD as refuge and a fountain of new wine. Where do you long to see wrongs made right, and are you willing to take shelter in the same God before whom all will finally stand?
