Ezekiel 30
A further oracle against Egypt announces the day of the LORD, a cloudy day of doom for Egypt and her allies. The sword will come; Ethiopia, Libya, and others fall with her. God will destroy the idols of Memphis, set fire to her cities, and scatter the Egyptians. He has broken Pharaoh's arm so it cannot hold a sword, while strengthening the arm of Babylon's king to execute judgment.
What happens in Ezekiel 30
The word of the LORD calls for wailing, for the day is near, a cloudy day of doom for Egypt. The sword will fall, and great pain will grip Ethiopia as the slain drop and Egypt's foundations are broken. Her allies, Ethiopia, Libya, Lydia, and the mingled peoples, fall with her by the sword. God will make Egypt desolate by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar and his armies, the terror of the nations. He will destroy the idols of Noph (Memphis), set fire to Zoan and the other cities, pour out fury on Sin, and cut off the multitude of No (Thebes), sending Egypt's people into captivity.
In a second image, God declares he has broken the arm of Pharaoh, and it will not be bound up to heal or hold a sword. Instead God strengthens the arms of Babylon's king and puts his own sword in his hand.
Ezekiel 30 in context
One of the seven Egypt oracles, continuing the theme of Egypt's coming humiliation by Babylon. The phrase the day of the LORD borrows the prophetic language of a decisive divine intervention, here focused on Egypt and her mercenary allies. Memphis (Noph), Thebes (No), Zoan, and Pelusium (Sin) were major Egyptian centers.
The image of the broken arm reflects a proverb of shattered military power, since the arm symbolized strength. God directs history, weakening one nation and strengthening another to accomplish his purpose.

Egypt's doom is framed as the day of the LORD, a cloudy day (Ezekiel 30:3), one occurrence of a theme that runs through the prophets toward its ultimate horizon, the day of the Lord unveiled in Christ, both his first coming and his return to judge and save (Acts 2:20; 2 Peter 3:10). Why does God strengthen Babylon, a pagan empire?
God uses even godless nations as instruments of his justice, breaking Pharaoh's arm while strengthening Babylon's to execute judgment on Egypt. This does not make Babylon righteous; it shows God's sovereignty over all history. He can employ any power to accomplish his purposes, then hold that power accountable in turn, as Ezekiel's own oracles against Babylon's pride imply.
Reflection
This chapter insists that a day of reckoning is appointed even for the mightiest, and that God alone strengthens or breaks the arm of nations. It invites humility about human power, including your own. Where do you trust in strength that God could break in a day? Rest instead in the saving arm of the Lord revealed in Christ.
