1 John 1
John testifies to what the apostles heard, saw, and touched of the Word of life, proclaiming it so that readers may share their fellowship with the Father and the Son and have full joy. The message is that God is light. To walk in the light is to have fellowship and cleansing by Jesus' blood. Denying sin is self-deception; confessing it meets God's faithful forgiveness.
What happens in 1 John 1
John opens not with a greeting but with testimony, insisting that the eternal life which was with the Father has been made manifest, heard with ears, seen with eyes, and handled with hands. He and the other witnesses declare this so that their readers may enter the same fellowship, a fellowship that is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ, and so that joy may be complete. He then states the message received from Christ: God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
From this he draws honest tests. To claim fellowship with God while walking in darkness is a lie; but walking in the light brings genuine fellowship and continual cleansing by the blood of Jesus. To claim sinlessness is self-deception and calls God a liar. The remedy is confession, met by a God who is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse from all unrighteousness.
