Raising Kids in a Secular World

Raising children of faith in a secular world is not about building higher walls but deeper roots. Give your child a strong, warm, joyful faith at home; help them think, not just conform; do not hide them from hard questions but face those questions together; surround them with a loving church community; and trust God rather than fear the culture. Faith that engages honestly grows sturdier than faith that only hides.

If this is you: you look at the culture your child is growing up in, its screens, its messages, its assumptions, and you feel afraid for their faith and their heart. That love and concern are good. But fear is a poor teacher. You can raise a rooted, thoughtful, faith-filled child even here, and God has not left you to do it alone.

Deep roots, not just high walls

You cannot seal a child off from the world forever, and trying to often backfires. The stronger strategy is deep roots: a faith so warm, real, and well understood at home that it can stand in open air. Jesus prayed not that his followers would be taken out of the world, but kept in it.

“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.”
John 17:15

Teach them to think, not just to conform

A child who only knows what to believe, but not why, is fragile when the culture pushes back. Help your child reason, ask questions, and understand the good reasons for faith, so their belief is their own conviction and not a borrowed rule. Give them a faith that can breathe.

Engage the culture honestly, together

Surround them, and trust God

No family raises children of faith alone. A loving church, godly friendships, and other trusted adults help your child see that they are not the only ones who believe. And in the end, you plant and water, but God gives the growth. You can do your part with love and leave the outcome, and your child, in his good hands, without fear.

“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”
Isaiah 40:11

Frequently asked questions

How do I protect my child's faith in a secular culture?
Focus on deep roots more than high walls: give your child a warm, well-understood faith at home, help them think and ask questions, engage the culture honestly together rather than only forbidding, and surround them with a loving church. A faith that engages tends to be sturdier than one that only hides.
Should I shelter my child from secular ideas or expose them?
Total sheltering is neither possible nor wise long term, but neither is throwing a young child into everything. The healthiest path is guided engagement: meet ideas together at an age-appropriate pace, talk about them openly, and teach your child to weigh what they hear against God's truth and love.
How do I not raise my kids in fear of the world?
Lead with faith, not fear. Remember that God loves your child even more than you do and is at work in their life. Model a joyful, confident faith, keep your home warm and honest, do your part faithfully, and entrust the outcome to God, the Good Shepherd who carries the lambs.

Come and see, together

You are not raising your child against the world so much as for the God who loves the world. Root them in his love, and trust the Good Shepherd to keep the lambs he carries.

You do not have to have all the answers to raise a child who loves God. The same Jesus who said ‘suffer the little children to come unto me’ welcomes you and your family just as you are. Begin small: read a little of his own story together, say a short prayer at bedtime, and let his love do the growing. A gentle place to start is the Gospel of John.
