Who was Saint Lawrence?
Saint Lawrence was a deacon of Rome martyred in the third century. Ordered to hand over the treasures of the church, he gathered the poor, the sick, and the crippled and presented them, saying, These are the treasures of the church. He was put to death for it with great courage.
Why the patron of the poor?
For that witness, he is the patron of the poor, and of cooks and deacons.
