Saint Joseph of Cupertino was a seventeenth-century friar so caught up in prayer that, by many accounts, he was seen to rise from the ground in ecstasy. He was a simple man who had struggled greatly with learning.

Because of those accounts of being lifted from the earth, he became the patron of pilots, aviators, and, because of his own struggles, of students facing exams.
