Who was Saint Andrew?
Saint Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter and one of the first disciples Jesus called, himself a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. He was the one who brought his brother to Jesus and, in John's Gospel, brought the boy with the loaves and fish.
Why the patron of fishermen?
As a fisherman called by Christ to fish for people, he is the patron of fishermen, and also of Scotland, Greece, and Russia.
