Who was Saint Florian?
Saint Florian was a Roman officer in what is now Austria who refused to renounce Christ during a persecution and was martyred by being thrown into a river. He is one of the oldest and most honored saints of central Europe.
Why the patron of firefighters?
By tradition he once saved a town from fire, and because of both his martyrdom by water and that story, he became the patron of firefighters and of those in danger from fire and flood.
