Who was Saint Nicholas?
Saint Nicholas was the fourth-century bishop of Myra, famous for his secret generosity, especially to poor children and families. His quiet gift-giving grew, over the centuries, into the figure of Santa Claus.
Why the patron of children?
Because of his love and hidden gifts to the young and the needy, he is the patron of children, and also of sailors and of those in need.
