Who was Saint Matthew?
Saint Matthew was a tax collector in Capernaum, despised by his neighbors for his trade, until Jesus passed by and simply said, Follow me, and he rose and left everything. He became an apostle and the writer of the first Gospel.
Why the patron of accountants and bankers?
Because he had kept accounts as a tax collector before Christ called him, he is the patron of accountants, bankers, and tax workers.
