A path through Scripture
From Wandering to Home
Wandering → the far country → the Father runs → home
Maybe you have drifted far from God, or were never close, and coming back feels impossible or embarrassing. The Bible's picture of return is not a cold reception. It is a Father who runs.
Walk the path
All we like sheep have gone astray
Isaiah 53:6“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way. Wandering is the human story, honestly named.
While he was yet a long way off
Luke 15:20“And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”
The prodigal son heads home rehearsing his apology, and while he is still far off his father sees him, runs, and embraces him. God's welcome outruns your speech.
You will find me
Jeremiah 29:13“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. The way back is not blocked; it is open, and He is looking for you.
This my son was lost, and is found
Luke 15:24“For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.”
The father throws a feast: for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. Return is met with joy, not a lecture.
Come home to rest
Matthew 11:28“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden. The door home is a Person, and He is holding it open.
Where the path arrives: Jesus
The most famous story Jesus ever told about coming back to God has almost no words for the son and a running father. That is the point. God is not standing at the door with folded arms, waiting for a good enough apology. In Christ, He runs to meet the returning, throws His arms around them, and calls for a feast. It does not matter how far you have wandered or how long it has been. The way home was opened at the cross, and the Father is already looking down the road for you. You can come home.
