What happened at the table
At a village wedding the wine runs out, a quiet disaster that would have shamed the family. Jesus' mother brings the problem to Him. He has the servants fill six stone jars with water, and when it is drawn out, it has become wine, and the best wine of the feast, saved for last. It is the first of His signs, and He does it not to solve a crisis of survival but to keep a celebration going.
