It is a detail so ordinary it is easy to read past, and it is quietly astonishing. The One through whom, John says, all things were made, sits down at a well because he is tired. 'Wearied with his journey.' He had walked for hours in the midday heat, and his body, a real human body, needed to rest. Elsewhere he is asleep in a boat, exhausted enough that a violent storm does not wake him. He hungers in the wilderness. He thirsts on the cross.

We can hold a picture of God as pure, tireless power, and there is truth in it. But in Christ, that power took on a body that ached, and got hungry, and had to stop and sit down. And it was in that very moment of exhaustion, sitting tired at a well, that he had one of the most tender conversations in the Gospels, offering living water to a woman everyone else avoided. His weariness did not stop his love; it happened right in the middle of it.
