Why he asked

The woman has bled for twelve years, spent everything on doctors, grown only worse, and become ritually unclean, cut off from ordinary human touch that whole time. She does not dare ask Jesus openly; she reaches through the crush of the crowd to touch just the hem of his robe, certain even that will be enough, and it is. She is healed instantly, secretly, and starts to slip away.

And Jesus stops the entire procession to ask, 'Who touched me?' The disciples think it is absurd, the crowd is pressing on all sides, everyone is touching him. But he knows the difference between the crowd that jostles and the one desperate hand of faith. Why does he insist on finding her? Not to embarrass her, though she comes trembling. It is because he will not let her leave with only a healing when she could leave with a relationship. He calls her 'daughter,' the only person in the Gospels he addresses that way, and sends her in peace. He wanted her face, not just her faith.

He could have let her slip away healed and anonymous. He stopped everything because he wanted to know her, not just fix her.
