Christ Against the World
No Human Being Was Built to Be Your God
The great modern romance is that the right person will complete you, heal the ache, and make you whole. But no human being was built to bear the weight of a god, and asking them to will crush the very love you hoped to protect. The Christian vision is that only God can be the center; when a person is put in that place, both of you are set up to fail, and when God holds the center, human love is finally free to be itself.
Listen to how we talk about love, and you will hear a quiet theology. The right person will complete you. They are your everything. You are their whole world. It sounds like devotion, and part of it is. But underneath runs an assumption worth surfacing: that somewhere out there is a human being who can fill the deepest emptiness in you and make you finally whole.
This belief did not arrive from nowhere. As older sources of meaning like faith, community, and shared story thinned in many lives, the romantic bond was quietly asked to carry the weight they once distributed. One relationship is now expected to be lover, best friend, therapist, family, and reason for being. Songs, films, and stories rehearse the creed daily. It is a beautiful hope, and it is far too heavy for any mortal shoulders.
The cost lands on the person you love most. Asked to be a god, they must fail, and their ordinary limits start to feel like betrayals. You grow disappointed that a human being is only human. They feel the crushing pressure of being someone's entire meaning. Jealousy, control, and despair often grow not from too little love but from love asked to do a divine job. And when the feeling fades, as feelings do, the whole structure trembles.
Christ reorders this without cooling it. He calls his followers to a love so strong it lays down its life, yet he refuses to let even the dearest human bond occupy the center reserved for God. He tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves, which assumes we are already held and loved by God first. The love he commands flows from a fullness received, not a hunger imposed on another fragile person.
The Christian vision is that you are already fully known and loved by the One who made you, and that this frees human love from an impossible assignment. When God holds the center, your spouse or friend no longer has to be your savior. They get to be a person, cherished and imperfect, a fellow traveler rather than a deity on probation. Paradoxically, the love you stop worshiping is the love you can finally receive.
A better way loves people fiercely and refuses to deify them. Let God be the ground, and let your beloved be a gift rather than a god. Expect them to be human; forgive them for it as you hope to be forgiven. Build a life with more than one source of meaning: faith, friendship, work, and community. Love that is not asked to be everything is finally free to be something real and lasting.
“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
John 4:14The strongest objection: this can sound like holding back, keeping one foot out of love to protect yourself, when great love actually requires reckless, total devotion. And some people use divine language to avoid intimacy. Fair. The Christian call is not to love less but to love from a settled fullness rather than a desperate lack. Refusing to make a person your god is not withholding; it is the very thing that lets you give yourself completely without demanding they save you, which is the only kind of devotion a human being can actually survive.
If you have asked one relationship to be everything, you were made to be held by a love that does not fail, so your human loves can be free. Living Bread can help you widen the ground under your life through prayer, community, and Scripture. Consider joining others here who are learning to love people without deifying them, and to receive first the love that lets them love well.
Name to God one thing you have been silently demanding a person save you from, and ask him to carry it, so you can love that person as a person rather than a rescuer.
Questions worth sitting with
Is it wrong to make someone your whole world?
Most Christian teaching would gently say yes, not because love is wrong but because no human can bear the weight of being your entire source of meaning. Asking one person to be your god tends to crush both the person and the love. Love is meant to flow from being held by God, not to replace him.
What does Christianity say about finding the one?
Christianity honors marriage and deep love but questions the idea that a single perfect person will complete you. It teaches that wholeness comes from God, which frees a partner from an impossible role and lets them be a cherished, imperfect human rather than a savior.
Why do relationships feel so disappointing?
One common reason is expecting a person to fill a need only God can fill. When a partner is asked to be your everything, their ordinary human limits start to feel like failures. Loving from a settled sense of being already loved tends to lift that unbearable pressure and let the relationship breathe.
