How to Teach My Child About God

Teach your child about God the way God teaches us: gently, patiently, and mostly through love. You do not need to be a theologian. Talk about God in ordinary moments, thank him for good things, point to his kindness in the world, read a little of the Bible together, and let your own trust in him be something your child can see. Faith is caught as much as taught.

If this is you: you want your child to know God, but you worry you will explain it wrong, or that your own faith feels small. Take heart. Your child does not need a perfect teacher. They need a parent who loves them and loves God, and is willing to walk it out together.

Start with who God is: love

Before a child can understand any doctrine, they can understand being loved. The most important thing a young child can learn about God is that he is good, that he made them on purpose, and that he loves them more than even mum and dad do. Build everything else on that foundation.

“We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”
Psalm 78:4

Teach in ordinary moments

The Bible pictures faith being passed on not in a classroom but in daily life, at the table, on the walk, at bedtime. Little and often beats long and rare.

“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Practical, gentle ways to begin:

Let your own faith show

Timothy’s faith began at home, handed down through his grandmother and mother. You do not have to manufacture something you do not have. Simply let your child walk alongside your real, growing trust in God.

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”
2 Timothy 1:5

Frequently asked questions

What age should I start teaching my child about God?
You can begin from the very start. Babies and toddlers understand love and security long before words, and that is the first thing they learn about God: that he is good and near. Simple prayers, thankfulness, and Bible stories can grow with them year by year.
What if I do not know much about the Bible myself?
That is completely okay. You can learn alongside your child. Start with short Bible stories or a children's Bible, keep it simple, and be honest when you do not know something. A family that seeks God together is a beautiful thing, and a local church can help.
How do I make God feel real and not just a story?
Connect God to real life: thank him for real gifts, pray about real worries, and point to his goodness in ordinary days. When children see faith shaping how their parents live, love, and forgive, God becomes real and not merely a character in a book.

Come and see, together

God is not waiting for you to get it right before he draws near to your family. He is already near.

You do not have to have all the answers to raise a child who loves God. The same Jesus who said ‘suffer the little children to come unto me’ welcomes you and your family just as you are. Begin small: read a little of his own story together, say a short prayer at bedtime, and let his love do the growing. A gentle place to start is the Gospel of John.
