How to Follow Jesus

You follow Jesus the way you begin any real friendship: you come as you are and you stay near. Jesus said those who continue in his word are truly his disciples. So it starts small and honest, turning to him in trust, reading his words, praying, walking with others who love him, and coming back every time you drift. There is no secret and no hazing. Grace goes first, and it keeps you.

The word is “continue.” Not perform, not perfect. Simply stay in his word, keep near him, and truth and freedom come as fruit, not as a fee paid in advance.

What this looks like

• Come to him honestly. Tell him you want to follow, doubts and all. That prayer is enough to begin.
• Stay in his word. Read a little of the Gospels each day. Mark is short and vivid; start there.
• Talk to him. Prayer is not a formula. It is telling God the truth and listening for him.
• Walk with his people. No one follows well alone. Find a church or a couple of friends who love him.
• Keep returning. You will fail. Returning is not the end of following; it is the shape of it.

None of this earns God’s love. You already have it in Christ. These are simply how you stay close to the One who is already holding on to you.
