The Gift of Teaching

The gift of teaching is a Spirit given ability to understand the truth of God's Word and to explain it clearly, so that God's people grow in knowledge, faith, and obedience. Paul names it in Romans 12, and Scripture treats it as a sober and weighty gift, given for the building up of the whole body in the truth.

What the gift is

Paul writes in Romans, or he that teacheth, on teaching, listing teaching among the gifts God gives His church. The gift of teaching is the Spirit given capacity to grasp the meaning of Scripture and to make it clear and applicable to others, so that they come to know God and live by His truth. It is not merely the ability to speak, but to open the Word rightly and feed the flock with sound doctrine.

Scripture treats this gift with great seriousness. James warns, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation, for the teacher handles holy things and shapes souls. Paul charges Timothy to study to show himself approved, a workman rightly dividing the word of truth. The gift is a trust; those who carry it answer to God for how faithfully they handle His Word.

How it appears in the New Testament

Jesus was above all called Teacher, and the crowds were astonished at His doctrine, for He taught with authority. He commissioned His church to make disciples, teaching them to observe all He commanded. The early church continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine, and God set teachers in the church for its growth. Apollos, mighty in the Scriptures, and Priscilla and Aquila, who expounded the way of God more perfectly to him, show the gift at work.

Paul's letters are themselves a monument to this gift, unfolding the truth of the gospel so that the church could stand. He urged that elders be apt to teach, that sound doctrine be guarded, and that the faithful word be committed to faithful men who would be able to teach others also. The health of the church has always risen and fallen with the faithfulness of its teaching.

How it builds up the body of Christ

The body grows by truth. Paul says God gave teachers for the perfecting of the saints, that we be no more children, tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine. Where the Word is taught faithfully, believers are grounded, error is kept out, and the whole church matures into the likeness of Christ. Teaching feeds faith, for faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

This gift builds up only when it serves the truth and not the teacher. Paul warns of those who teach for gain, or to gather disciples after themselves, or who dote about questions that breed strife. True teaching aims at love out of a pure heart, and always sends the hearer past the teacher to Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

How to recognize and use it

Those with this gift love the Scriptures, delight to understand them, and find joy in helping others see what they have seen. If that is you, take the trust soberly. Study diligently, live what you teach, and handle the Word with care and humility, remembering the stricter judgment. Teach to feed the flock, not to display your knowledge, and let love be the aim of all your instruction.

Whatever your gift, sit under good teaching and love the truth, for every believer is called to grow in the knowledge of God. And honor those who labor in the word and doctrine, for they keep the whole church anchored in Christ.

How this gift points to Christ

All faithful teaching leads to one Teacher, for the Scriptures the teacher opens are they which testify of Jesus, and in Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The risen Christ Himself, on the road to Emmaus, expounded in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself, and every true teacher still walks that road, showing Christ on every page. The gift does not exist to gather disciples to the teacher but to present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. Where teaching feeds the flock on the Son of God and sends the hearer past the teacher to the Lord, it is being faithful to its whole purpose.

The more excellent way

Whatever place the gift of Teaching holds, Paul sets one thing above every gift. Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, he says, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal; and though I have all knowledge, and all faith, and have not charity, I am nothing. The gifts will one day pass away, but now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; and the greatest of these is charity.

So this gift, like all the rest, is given by one Spirit for the common good, to build up the one body of Christ, and it is nothing at all apart from love. The gifts are not for our standing but for our serving, and they all belong to Him whose body the church is. Use whatever you have been given to love one another, and to point every eye to Jesus, from whom every good gift comes and to whom every gift returns its praise.
