The Gift of Discerning of Spirits

Discerning of spirits is a Spirit given ability to tell what is truly of God from what only appears to be, to recognize the Holy Spirit's work and to see through error and deception. Paul lists it among the gifts, and it guards the church, for the good of the whole body, keeping it anchored to the truth as it is in Christ.

What the gift is

Paul names discerning of spirits among the manifestations of the Spirit. It is the gift of spiritual sight, a God given ability to distinguish the source of what is happening: whether a word, an influence, or a spirit is of God, of the flesh, or of the enemy. In a world of counterfeits, where Paul warns that Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light, the church needs eyes that can tell the true from the false.

This gift is not suspicion or cynicism, nor a license to judge hearts, which belongs to God alone. It is a Spirit given clarity that protects the flock. John urges believers to try the spirits whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the world, and gives the test: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. Discernment always measures by Christ and His Word.

How it appears in the New Testament

We see this gift when Peter saw through Simon the sorcerer, whose heart was not right with God, and when Paul discerned that the slave girl's spirit at Philippi, though it spoke true words, was not of God, and commanded it to come out. Jesus Himself perceived what was in men and was not deceived by flattery or by show. The apostles constantly guarded the young churches against false teachers who came in sheep's clothing.

The whole New Testament is watchful. Paul warns the Ephesian elders that grievous wolves would enter the flock; John, Peter, and Jude all write to expose deceivers. The gift of discernment is the church's God given immune system, recognizing the counterfeit before it can do its damage, and always by the standard of the true gospel of Christ.

How it builds up the body of Christ

Discernment protects. It keeps the church from being carried about with every wind of doctrine, from following false shepherds, from mistaking spiritual excitement for the Spirit of God. When this gift is at work, error is caught early, the vulnerable are shielded, and the body stays fixed on the truth. It is a quiet, often unseen ministry, and an immense mercy to the church.

Like every gift it must be carried in love. Discernment is not for wounding people or feeding a critical spirit, but for guarding the flock Christ died for. Used rightly, it does not divide the body in suspicion; it keeps it whole and safe in the truth.

How to recognize and use it

Those with this gift often sense when something is off before they can explain it, and are grieved by what is false where others are only impressed. If that is you, root your discernment in Scripture, for the surest test of any spirit is the Word of God and the confession of Christ. Test everything, John says, and hold fast to Christ crucified and risen as the measure of all.

Use the gift to protect, not to accuse; to warn gently, not to wound. Bring your concerns in humility and love, ready to be wrong, and always aiming to keep the body safe rather than to prove yourself right. True discernment serves the peace and purity of the church Christ is building.

Where Christians differ, held honestly. Because discerning of spirits is listed among the more supernatural gifts, Christians discuss how it operates today. Here sincere, Bible loving Christians genuinely differ, and it is worth saying so plainly. Cessationists hold that the more visibly miraculous gifts were tied to the foundational age of the apostles and to confirming the gospel before the New Testament was complete, and that they have therefore ceased, or greatly quieted, now that we have the finished Scripture. Continuationists hold that the Spirit never withdrew any gift, that the same God still gives as He wills, and that we should earnestly desire the gifts while testing everything by the Word. Godly, careful believers stand on both sides. The Living Bread takes no side in this. What every faithful reading agrees on is the purpose: the gifts are given by one Spirit to build up the church, never to exalt the person who carries them, never to rival or add to God's revealed Word, and never to be pursued apart from love.

How this gift points to Christ

The measure of all discernment is Christ, for the test Scripture gives is whether a spirit confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This gift guards the church by holding everything up to Him, refusing every teaching and every spirit that dims or denies the Son of God. It is finally a jealousy for Jesus, a refusal to let His flock be led away from Him by counterfeits, however bright they shine. So the discerning heart is not merely suspicious; it is captured by Christ, and it knows the true because it knows Him, as sheep know the voice of their own Shepherd and will not follow a stranger.

The more excellent way

Whatever place the gift of Discerning of Spirits holds, Paul sets one thing above every gift. Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, he says, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal; and though I have all knowledge, and all faith, and have not charity, I am nothing. The gifts will one day pass away, but now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; and the greatest of these is charity.

So this gift, like all the rest, is given by one Spirit for the common good, to build up the one body of Christ, and it is nothing at all apart from love. The gifts are not for our standing but for our serving, and they all belong to Him whose body the church is. Use whatever you have been given to love one another, and to point every eye to Jesus, from whom every good gift comes and to whom every gift returns its praise.
