The gift of administration, which the King James Bible calls governments, is a Spirit given ability to organize and steer the work of God's people wisely, like a pilot guiding a ship. Paul names it among those God has set in the church, a grace given for the good of the whole body, that the church may be well ordered and its mission carried out.

What the gift is

Among the things God has set in the church Paul names governments. The Greek word behind it is a word for steering a ship, the work of the helmsman who guides the vessel through wind and current to its port. The gift of administration, then, is a Spirit given ability to steer, to organize people and resources, to plan and coordinate so that the work of God reaches its goal. It is the gift of wise oversight and good order.

It is close to leadership but has its own flavor: where leadership provides vision and direction, administration provides the wise ordering that turns vision into reality. Paul cared deeply about order in the church, insisting that all things be done decently and in order, for God is not the author of confusion but of peace. How it appears in the New Testament

The New Testament shows this gift at work whenever the growing church had to organize itself. When the number of disciples multiplied and the widows were being overlooked, the apostles wisely appointed seven to oversee the daily distribution, so that ministry could continue in order. Paul organized a great collection for the poor saints in Jerusalem across many churches, arranging trustworthy men to carry it, providing for honest things in the sight of all men.

Titus was left in Crete to set in order the things that were wanting and to appoint elders in every city. The pastoral letters are full of instruction for the ordering of the church's life and worship. Behind the visible ministries of the New Testament stands constant, wise administration, the steering that kept the church's growing work from descending into confusion.

How it builds up the body of Christ

As a church grows, good order becomes essential, and this gift supplies it. The administrator plans, coordinates, and oversees, so that resources are used well, work is not duplicated or dropped, and the mission moves forward without chaos. This frees others to teach, lead, and serve, and it protects the church's witness by keeping its affairs honest and orderly.

Like leadership, this gift is meant to serve, never to control. Administration that smothers the life of the Spirit in red tape, or that grasps for power, has lost its purpose. Rightly used, it is a quiet, priceless blessing, the steady hand on the helm that lets the whole body sail together toward the harbor of Christ.

How to recognize and use it

Those with this gift see how to organize what is scattered, plan several steps ahead, and bring order and follow through where others feel overwhelmed. If that is you, serve the church with it gladly, for good administration is a labor of love that blesses everyone. Steer to serve, not to control; keep the mission, not the machinery, at the center; and hold your plans with an open hand before the Lord, who directs our steps.

And let the church value this gift, unglamorous as it seems, for without it good intentions dissolve into confusion. Whatever our gift, we are called to do all things decently and in order, for the God we serve is a God of peace, and He is honored when His people work together well.

How this gift points to Christ

Behind every wise ordering of the church stands the Lord who is not the author of confusion but of peace, and who is Himself the Head from whom the whole body is fitly joined together. Good administration serves that joining, so that the members work as one under one Head, Christ. It steers not toward a leader's kingdom but toward His, keeping the mission of Jesus at the center and holding every plan with an open hand before the Lord who directs our steps. In bringing order out of confusion for the sake of the gospel, this quiet gift honors the God of peace and helps the whole ship of the church sail together toward its Lord.

The more excellent way

Whatever place the gift of Administration holds, Paul sets one thing above every gift. Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, he says, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal; and though I have all knowledge, and all faith, and have not charity, I am nothing. The gifts will one day pass away, but now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; and the greatest of these is charity.

So this gift, like all the rest, is given by one Spirit for the common good, to build up the one body of Christ, and it is nothing at all apart from love. The gifts are not for our standing but for our serving, and they all belong to Him whose body the church is. Use whatever you have been given to love one another, and to point every eye to Jesus, from whom every good gift comes and to whom every gift returns its praise.
