Christianity in the Philippines

The Philippines is the great Christian nation of Asia, the only one where Christians form a large majority. The faith came with Spanish colonization from the sixteenth century, and Roman Catholicism became woven deeply into Filipino life, in festivals, devotions, and family. How Christianity came to the Philippines

Christianity arrived with the Spanish. When Ferdinand Magellan's expedition reached the islands in 1521, the first Mass was celebrated and early converts were made. Sustained colonization from 1565 under Miguel Lopez de Legazpi brought Catholic missionary orders, and over the following centuries the faith spread across most of the archipelago, though the southern region of Mindanao remained largely Muslim. Catholicism became bound up with Filipino identity, expressed in great festivals, devotion to the Santo Nino, and the family rhythms of village life.

Filipino Christianity has not only received but also reshaped the faith. In 1902 the Iglesia Filipina Independiente broke from Rome as a nationalist church, and later the homegrown Iglesia ni Cristo grew into a large body. Protestant and evangelical churches arrived especially after 1898.
