How Christianity came to Kenya

In 1844 the German missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf, working with the Church Missionary Society, settled near Mombasa, began translating Scripture, and with Johannes Rebmann explored the interior. Through the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Catholic and Protestant missions moved inland, founding the schools and hospitals that shaped modern Kenya and drawing many into the faith.

A defining moment was the East African Revival, which began in the 1930s in Rwanda and spread through the region, including Kenya. It called Christians to open confession, changed lives, and fellowship, and it left a deep mark of heartfelt, personal faith. Kenyans also founded their own churches, sometimes in response to colonial-era tensions, giving African expression to Christian worship.
