Celebrations around the world
Semana Santa (Holy Week Processions)
Spain, Guatemala, the Philippines, and Latin America · Holy Week, the week before Easter
Semana Santa is the solemn keeping of Holy Week, walking with Jesus from Palm Sunday to the cross. Whole cities become a living remembrance of the suffering and love of Christ in his final days.
How it is celebrated
Great processions carry images of Christ and Mary through the streets, and in some places the faithful lay carpets of flowers and colored sawdust, called alfombras, for the procession to pass over.
In the Word
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.Isaiah 53:3 (KJV)
