The attributes of God
The Attributes of God
Who is God? Scripture answers not first with a definition but with a character. God has made himself known, in his works, in his word, and above all in his Son, and what he has revealed of himself we call his attributes: he is holy, loving, merciful, gracious, just, faithful, sovereign, all knowing, all powerful, everywhere present, unchanging, good, wise, eternal, self existent, and true, and, held honestly with his mercy, opposed to all evil. Each page below shows what an attribute means, where Scripture reveals it, where we misunderstand it, why it is good news, and how you see it made visible in Jesus Christ, who is the image of the invisible God.
A note offered humbly and for all Christians: God is one, simple, and undivided in his being, and these attributes are not parts of him but the one God seen from many sides. His holiness is loving, his love is holy, his justice is merciful, and his mercy is just. He is also greater than all our words, and no page can contain him. What we can say, we say only because he has graciously revealed it, above all in Jesus Christ, who is the image of the invisible God.
