The attributes of God

The Attributes of God

Who is God? Scripture answers not first with a definition but with a character. God has made himself known, in his works, in his word, and above all in his Son, and what he has revealed of himself we call his attributes: he is holy, loving, merciful, gracious, just, faithful, sovereign, all knowing, all powerful, everywhere present, unchanging, good, wise, eternal, self existent, and true, and, held honestly with his mercy, opposed to all evil. Each page below shows what an attribute means, where Scripture reveals it, where we misunderstand it, why it is good news, and how you see it made visible in Jesus Christ, who is the image of the invisible God.

The Holiness of GodIsaiah 6:3The Love of God1 John 4:8The Mercy of GodExodus 34:6The Grace of GodEphesians 2:8The Justice of GodDeuteronomy 32:4The Faithfulness of GodLamentations 3:22-23The Sovereignty of GodPsalm 115:3The Omniscience of GodPsalm 139:1-6The Omnipotence of GodJeremiah 32:17The Omnipresence of GodPsalm 139:7-10The Eternity of GodPsalm 90:2The Immutability of GodMalachi 3:6The Goodness of GodPsalm 34:8The Wisdom of GodRomans 11:33The Wrath of GodRomans 1:18The Truth of GodNumbers 23:19The Self-Existence of GodExodus 3:14

A note offered humbly and for all Christians: God is one, simple, and undivided in his being, and these attributes are not parts of him but the one God seen from many sides. His holiness is loving, his love is holy, his justice is merciful, and his mercy is just. He is also greater than all our words, and no page can contain him. What we can say, we say only because he has graciously revealed it, above all in Jesus Christ, who is the image of the invisible God.
