The Jordan, Where He Was Baptized
The Jordan is not a mighty river. In many places you can wade across it, its brown water winding slow between banks thick with reeds and tamarisk. Yet no river on earth carries more memory. Israel crossed it on dry ground to enter the promised land. Prophets walked its banks. And here, near where the wilderness meets the water, a wild preacher named John stood waist deep, calling the nation to repent and be washed. Crowds came out to him, confessing and going down into the current. Stand on the bank and listen to the water moving over the stones, and imagine the day the sinless One stepped in among the sinners, and the sky itself tore open above His head.

The place
The Jordan River runs south through a deep rift valley from the Sea of Galilee down to the Dead Sea, one of the lowest points on the surface of the earth. It is muddy and modest in size, fed by streams and snowmelt from the north. In the first century its banks were lined with vegetation, and its fords were ancient crossing points woven through the history of Israel. John the Baptist carried out his ministry in this region, most likely in the lower Jordan near the wilderness of Judea. The precise spot of Jesus's baptism is uncertain. Traditional sites lie on both the eastern and western banks near Jericho, and the river's course has shifted over the centuries.
What happened here
Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. John resisted, saying he needed to be baptized by Jesus, not the other way around, but Jesus insisted it was right in order to fulfill all righteousness. So He went down into the water. As He came up, the heavens opened, and the Spirit of God descended upon Him like a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, the voice of the Father, declaring that this was His beloved Son, in whom He was well pleased. It was the beginning of Jesus's public ministry, the moment the hidden years ended and the anointed work began, the whole Trinity revealed at the water's edge.
What this place reveals about Jesus
At the Jordan we see who Jesus truly is. He had no sin to confess, yet He stepped into the sinner's river, choosing from the very start to stand where we stand. In that moment the Father named Him beloved Son and the Spirit rested upon Him, so that the mystery of the one God in three Persons shone out over the water. Here is the beloved Son beginning the long road that would lead to the cross, already taking His place among the guilty. His baptism is a picture of the whole gospel, the righteous One entering our death and rising to newness, that we might be washed and named beloved in Him. The heavens opened over Him so that one day they might open over us.
