From Grief to Resurrection Hope

Grief is love with nowhere to go, and the Bible never rushes it. It sits with the weeping, all the way to a morning when the tomb was empty and death did not have the last word.
Walk the path
Near the brokenhearted
Psalm 34:18“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart. God does not stand at a distance from grief; Scripture places Him closest to the broken.
Jesus wept
John 11:35“Jesus wept.”
The shortest verse in the Bible. Standing at the grave of a friend, God in the flesh cried. Your tears are in good company.
I am the resurrection
John 11:25“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”
At that same grave, Jesus says, I am the resurrection, and the life. The answer to death is not a doctrine but a Person standing in front of it.
Mary at the tomb
John 20:15“Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.”
Grieving in the garden, Mary supposes the risen Jesus is the gardener, until He speaks her name. Grief was real, but it was not the end.
No more death
Revelation 21:4“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow. This is where grief is finally answered.
Where the path arrives: Jesus
Christianity does not answer grief with a shrug or a slogan. It answers with a God who wept at a graveside, and then walked out of His own grave three days after His. Jesus does not tell the grieving to stop crying; He cries with them, and then He does something no comfort could do: He rises. Because He lives, the goodbye is not forever. One day He will wipe every tear Himself, and death, the thing that took who you love, will be the thing that dies. Hope, in Christ, is not wishful thinking. It has a name, and an empty tomb.
