Is that true?

Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute?

False

False. The Bible never says Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. That image came from later preachers who blended her with other unnamed women in the Gospels, including a sinful woman and Mary of Bethany. In 1969 the Roman Catholic Church formally separated these figures, correcting the old conflation.

The history

Scripture describes Mary Magdalene only as a woman Jesus freed from seven demons and who followed him faithfully. In 591 Pope Gregory the Great, in a sermon, merged her with the anonymous sinful woman of Luke 7 and Mary of Bethany, and the label of prostitute stuck for centuries in Western tradition. In 1969 the Catholic Church revised its calendar and distinguished the three women.

What Scripture says

“And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,”Luke 8:2 (KJV)

The only detail Scripture gives about her past is that Jesus cast seven demons out of her, which the text never equates with prostitution.

Sources. The Gospels of Luke and John (which never call her a prostitute), the history of Pope Gregory's sixth century sermon conflating several women, and the Roman Catholic Church's 1969 calendar revision distinguishing them.

Where this points

Mary's true story is one of deliverance, not disgrace. Christ freed her, she followed him to the cross, and she was the first to see him risen. The gospel does not need to shame her to make grace shine; her restored life already tells of a Savior who lifts the broken.

People also ask

Where did the prostitute idea come from?

Largely from a 591 sermon by Pope Gregory the Great, who identified Mary Magdalene with an unnamed sinful woman and with Mary of Bethany. The Gospels themselves make no such link.

What does the Bible actually say about her?

It says Jesus healed her of seven demons, that she supported his ministry, stood by his cross, and was the first witness of his resurrection. Nothing describes her as a prostitute.
