The Last Trumpet
Scripture promises a coming sound like no other, the last trumpet at which the dead are raised and the Lord Himself descends. It is the sound of resurrection and homecoming. Christians hold different views of the end times, yet we share this trumpet hope.
“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”1 Corinthians 15:52

The sound in Scripture. Paul unveils a mystery to the Corinthians: "Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed" (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). To the Thessalonians he describes the same great day: "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). The last trumpet is the summons of resurrection, the moment when death is swallowed up in victory and the people of God are gathered to their Lord for ever.

What it means. The last trumpet is the sound of hope for everyone who has buried a loved one in Christ or faced their own mortality. Death is not the end of the story. There is a day appointed when the dead will be raised imperishable and the living transformed, when the whole redeemed family is gathered to the Lord. Paul gives this teaching not to feed speculation but to comfort grieving believers: "Wherefore comfort one another with these words" (1 Thessalonians 4:18). Christians sincerely differ over the timing and order of end-time events, and we do well to hold such details humbly rather than divide over them. But the core hope is shared by all who trust Christ: He will return, the dead will rise, and we shall ever be with the Lord. The trumpet reminds us to live in readiness, comforted, expectant, and not as those who have no hope.

His voice is the power behind the resurrection: "the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth" (John 5:28-29), for "the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live" (John 5:25). He is the Word by whom all things were made, and He is the risen Lord who has already conquered the grave, the firstfruits of them that slept. Because He lives, the trumpet is not a threat to His people but a promise. His sheep who heard His voice in life (John 10:27) will hear it call them from the dust, and death itself will lose its victory. The last sound of this age is the voice of the Son of God gathering His own.
