Water from the Rock
Dying of thirst in the desert, Israel found water pouring from a struck rock at Horeb. Paul says of that rock a startling thing: that Rock was Christ.
“Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”Exodus 17:6

What happened
What happened. In Exodus 17 Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin and pitched in Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. They chided with Moses and said, Give us water that we may drink, and their thirst turned quickly to accusation, murmuring that Moses had brought them out of Egypt to kill them with thirst. Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me. The LORD answered, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel, and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb, and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. From the hard rock came water enough for a whole nation and their flocks. Moses named the place Massah and Meribah, meaning temptation and strife, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?
What it revealed
What it revealed. The water from the rock revealed a God who provides even for a grumbling and undeserving people. Israel had not asked in faith but in anger, doubting whether God was among them at all, yet He answered with life giving water. It revealed that God Himself stood upon the rock, present in the very act of provision, not distant from His people's need. It revealed that provision came through the striking of the rock, an image of judgment falling so that mercy might flow. And it exposed the human heart. The place was named for temptation and strife because Israel put God to the test, treating His past deliverance as if it counted for nothing the moment they were thirsty. Yet the water flowed. The miracle stands as a rebuke to unbelief and a testimony to grace, that God gives drink to those who scarcely deserve to ask.

How it points to Christ. Here the New Testament is explicit and even bold. Writing of Israel in the wilderness, Paul says they did all drink the same spiritual drink, for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4). Paul identifies the source of that water with Christ Himself, present with His people in the wilderness. The rock had to be struck for the water to come, and Christ was struck, smitten of God and afflicted, so that living water might flow to us. Jesus stood in the temple and cried, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink, and John explains He spoke of the Spirit which they that believe on Him should receive (John 7:37-39). From the smitten Rock comes the water that never runs dry. What the desert rock gave for a day, Christ gives forever, a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Questions people ask
Is the rock to Christ connection Paul's idea or the text's?
Paul makes it explicit in 1 Corinthians 10:4, saying that Rock was Christ. He reads the wilderness rock as a real presence of Christ with His people. This is one of the New Testament's clearest identifications of an Old Testament miracle with the Lord Himself.
Why was Moses later punished over a rock?
That was a second, later incident at Kadesh (Numbers 20), where God told Moses to speak to the rock but he struck it in anger and took credit. For failing to honor God before the people, Moses was barred from the promised land. The Exodus 17 striking was done at God's command.
