Who was Saint Blaise?
Saint Blaise was a bishop and physician of Armenia, martyred in the early fourth century. By tradition he once saved a boy who was choking on a fish bone.
Why the patron of throat ailments?
From that story he became the patron invoked against diseases of the throat, and on his feast a blessing of throats is given with crossed candles.
