How to Serve Others

Jesus said the greatest among us are those who serve. Serving others is not a lesser calling; it is the very shape of a life that follows Christ. Here is how to begin.

  1. Follow Jesus' example

The Lord of all knelt to wash feet. Let His humility set the pattern for how and why you serve.

“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.”Mark 10:45, King James Version

  2. Start with who is near

You do not need a grand platform. Serve the people right in front of you, at home, at work, in your neighborhood.

“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men.”Galatians 6:10, King James Version

  3. Use what you have

God has given you gifts, time, and resources to serve with. Offer what is in your hand rather than waiting for more.

“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another.”1 Peter 4:10, King James Version

  4. Serve without seeking reward

Do good even where it cannot be repaid or noticed. Serving for God's eyes keeps the heart clean.

“When thou makest a feast, call the poor ... and thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee.”Luke 14:13-14, King James Version

  5. Do it as unto the Lord

See every act of service, however small, as done for Jesus Himself. That lifts the humblest task into worship.

“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”Matthew 25:40, King James Version

The One who makes this possible: Jesus

When you serve others, you are walking in the footsteps of Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life for us. He receives every act of love done for the least as done for Him. Serving is not how we earn His love; it is how His love flows through us to the world.

Love is meant to be shared. You can find people near you, share the good news, or pray for the one on your heart.

Common questions

How can I serve others as a Christian?

Follow Jesus' example of humble service by starting with the people near you, using the gifts and time you have, and serving without seeking reward. See every act, however small, as done for the Lord Himself.

Why is serving others important?

Jesus said the greatest are those who serve, and He tied love for God to love for people. Serving reflects Christ's own self-giving heart, blesses others, and is how God's love flows through us into the world.
