How to Read the Bible With Children
Read the Bible with children in small, warm, regular pieces, not long lectures. Start with the story parts, use a children’s Bible for younger ones, read with expression, ask ‘what do you think?’ more than you explain, and connect the story to God’s love and your child’s life. The goal is delight and familiarity, not information alone. Scripture can make a child wise unto salvation.
Why it is worth it
Paul reminded Timothy that he had known the Scriptures from childhood, and that they had shaped him toward faith in Christ. What you read with your child now can go with them for life.
Keep it small and joyful
- Little and often. A few minutes several times a week beats a long session once in a while.
- Start with stories. Creation, Noah, David, Daniel, and above all the life of Jesus. Narrative grabs children first.
- Use the right tool for the age. A picture-rich children’s Bible for little ones; a real Bible in a readable translation as they grow.
- Read with life. Do the voices, pause for suspense, let it be fun.
Let them wonder, not just listen
Ask open questions: ‘What do you think that felt like?’ ‘What does this show us about God?’ ‘Where are you in this story?’ Children remember what they discover far better than what they are told. Then gently connect it back to God’s love and to their own life.
Where to begin
The Gospels are the best starting place, because they are about Jesus. Read a little of Mark or John, or the parables and miracles, so your child meets Jesus in his own words and works. You can read the same passages together in the app’s family study, one passage at three levels for different ages.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best Bible for young children?
- For toddlers and preschoolers, a well-made illustrated children's Bible that tells the main stories simply is ideal. As children learn to read, move toward a real Bible in a clear, readable translation. The best Bible is the one your child will actually enjoy opening with you.
- Where should we start reading in the Bible with kids?
- Start with stories, especially the life of Jesus in the Gospels, along with favourites like creation, Noah, David and Goliath, and Daniel. Beginning with Jesus keeps the whole Bible centered where it belongs, on him.
- How long should Bible reading with children be?
- Short. A few minutes is plenty for young children, and even a single story or a few verses counts. Consistency and joy matter far more than length. It is better to stop while they still want more than to push until they resist.
Come and see, together
The Bible is not finally a set of lessons but a long, true story about the God who loves your family. Read it together and meet him in it.
You do not have to have all the answers to raise a child who loves God. The same Jesus who said ‘suffer the little children to come unto me’ welcomes you and your family just as you are. Begin small: read a little of his own story together, say a short prayer at bedtime, and let his love do the growing. A gentle place to start is the Gospel of John.
